In the US, only about 4.2% of abortions are performed during weeks 15-20 and only 1.4% after week 21.
But reproductive justice advocates know that attacks on late-term abortion are just a stepping stone for the pro-forced birth groups and that giving in to them on how we talk about late-term abortion can reinforce stereotypes and give ground on the "abortion is immoral but necessary" argument that leads to greater and greater restrictions. That's why I and many others have been very critical about how Barack Obama has talked about abortion. And he has recently made a statement that does not even pass constitutional muster, according to past Supreme Court rulings:
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says "mental distress" should not qualify as a justification for late-term abortions. . . . "Now, I don't think that 'mental distress' qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term."Meanwhile, the Supreme Court says bans must provide for exceptions for the health of the woman, including mental health. That's been the case since fucking 1973, and Obama is just fine and dandy with rolling that back.
What really boggles is NARAL's defense of this answer. Even though they themselves state that their position is that "A health exception must also account for the mental health problems that may occur in pregnancy. Severe fetal anomalies, for example, can exact a tremendous emotional toll on a pregnant woman and her family," they claim that Obama's statement is "consistent with Roe v. Wade." Apparently, his interview answer is just fine because he has previously stated he's against a ban that doesn't provide a mental health exception. WTF!?!?! SHorter NARAL: His answer is consistent because even though it's wrong, his actual position is okay.
Who is pointing out that not supporting a mental health exception is inconsistent with suport of Roe v Wade? A LEADING PRO-LIFE ADVOCATE.
AM I IN BIZZARO WORLD??????
Someone please tell me there is a good explanation for this.
UPDATE with further thoughts:
It also hits me, thanks to this publication from the Guttmacher Institute that Obama's statement also reinforces ableist* attitudes towards mental health and mental illness. His statement clearly carries with it the implication that mental health problems are not as serious as physical health problems. The other implication is that women who claim mental health problems are perhaps not being honest, or are just using it as an excuse. This also comes from not just sexist attitudes, but ableist ones as well.
*Someone please correct me if there is a more accurate term or if ableist isn't applied this way.

lets see 4.2% of 1.3 million is like 50,000. 1.4% is like 18,000.
Abortion is an evil, unciviled barbaric act. "pro-choice" is a sneaky evil term used to soften the heinous position that they take.
OMG I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT! What a convincing argument!
LOLOLOLOL
I bet you didn't know that in a 1987 survey almost half of the women getting late term abortions reported that it was because of assholes like you making it difficult to arrange for an abortion in the first trimester.
easy for you to say that you're "pro-choice", you've already been born. Do you know what happens to the baby in a 2nd or 3rd trimester abortion? Anybody who supports this needs their head examined.
Yawn.
And if I hadn't been born I wouldn't know it to be upset about it, would I?
Nothing happens to a baby in an abortion because there is no baby.
Thanks for posting on this Astrea. There are a few voices, but not enough don't you think? I have a mental illness and ableist is fine with me, though of course, I can't speak for anyone else. All the words stink, frankly.
I've been a bit smug watching Obama mess up because I SO knew he would. But this one shocked me, it really did, and it still does.
Don't go getting your head examined any time soon! Your head is doing much better than the empty one owned by "anonymous"
I wonder if anonymous knows that the abortion rate has remained steady for decades, including during times when abortion wasn't legal. Maternal death rates now, that's something else.

what do call this Astraea?

Hyperia, that is false (abortion rates)

ok, that's it. No more anonymous posts allowed. You'll have to register, you asshole, so you can't post your lies anonymously. Better yet, just go away with your woman-hating.
Hypseria, I feel the same way. Obama's statement shows he is either more conservative on pro-choice issues than I thought, or he doesn't know what he's talking about. Either way: scary.
I'll kindly have "Anonymous" know that my mother had an illegal, painful abortion in the 60's, for fear of being a teenager with no university education with a violent, alcoholic father - who quite likely would have killed her had he found out she's gotten pregnant "out of wedlock."
She later went on to have two daughters. Those two daughters would not have been born if she'd been forced to carry that first pregnancy, because she'd likely be dead.
Isn't it fun to play "What if?"
Thanks for sharing your story, rktothemk. Anonymous is just another sexist pro-forced birth asshole and won't be commenting here any more.
He can't be reached, but maybe someone else reading can.
